Shooting time lapse photos can be frustrating, especially if you are new to it. You could spend hours idling and come out with a bad photo or something that isn’t at par with other photos you’ve seen on the internet. Compared to other shooting modes like landscape or portrait, time lapse requires a lot of skills to accomplish properly, according to avid photographer Fred Brisker. To help you on your next time lapse photography session, here are some easy tips you can follow.

The first thing you need to do is to prepare thoroughly. Since time lapse photos take a lot of time, every second counts when you are plotting your shot. Preparations needed include the position of your shot, the exact time frame of when you will shoot, as well as travel time and getting your equipment together.

In terms of equipment, Fred Brisker believes that nothing ruins a time laps photo more than shake or movement. Make sure you have a rock solid camera stand and make sure nothing goes in the way of your shot or moves your camera. If you are shooting at cold climates, prepare items to keep yourself comfortable like wearing thick socks or putting on warm clothes. Likewise in the summer, wear sunscreen and wear breathable clothing.

If your camera has battery issues, replace it. The best way to minimize camera shake is to always keep the live view on so that the mirror will always stay up when the shutter fires. Not only that, an active histogram can also help you keep your exposure under control.

Lastly, practicing a lot and under different settings can help hone your skills. According to Fred Brisker , knowing what shutter speed is best for specific subjects can be the difference between hours of time wasted and a photograph worthy of selling.
