How to be a better urban photographer

Unlike nature photography which is often a peaceful environment, urban photography is all about capturing the beauty of the city amid a chaotic and splendid weave of technological advancement, culture, and diversity. One could say that urban photography is a lot more difficult to pull off amazingly. But for avid photographer Fred Brisker, it’s all about practicing and improving one’s skills in order to capture the cityscape better. Here are some tips to improve your skills as an urban photographer

Experiment with different angles

The standard eye-level cityscape photo is often the go-to perspective for urban photographers. But what separates a good photo from something that you can sell is uniqueness. You can achieve this by experimenting with different angles. What does the cityscape look like if you point your camera directly upward? Or what about a photo looking straight down from an iconic building? Unique perspectives often generate a lot of interest towards them. According to Fred Brisker, experimenting with different angles also help a photographer exercise planning shots and visualizing images.

Look at the competition

Right now, there are a lot more photographers making money with their shots compared to you. When was the last time you sat down to study and analyze their images? Are you able to tell what techniques they used or what settings they were using when they took the shot? Knowing from the best or at least those who are better than you at photography can help you step up your game. Learn how they are treating urban subjects and imagine how you could replicate styles which you like.

Understand how weather changes the scene

While changes in weather can cause dramatic changes in nature photography, their effects in urban photography is even more complex. Given the multiplicity of subjects, it’s nearly impossible to know how each subject in the city would react to specific changes in weather. Fred Brisker believes that this is where imagination comes in. A good urban photographer should have an idea what a subject would look like given a specific type of weather.
